Report of the Farming Forward Event on 3 October in Lelystad: prospects for the livestock sector
As of 3 October, after more than 37 years, Bio Enterprise b.v. has officially changed its company name to Farmula b.v.. This name change results from EU legislation, under which the term ‘biological’ (organic) and related terms such as abbreviations and translations are protected. The event, held at the Aviodrome, was the platform for unveiling the new company name of Bio Enterprise and for sharing views on the future of the livestock sector.
At the end of the programme, comedian Thijs Kemperink unveiled the new name of Bio Enterprise in a playful way: Farmula. This name, with its fitting tagline Farming Forward, stands for the formula for the future of livestock farming, with innovation, animal welfare and sustainability at its core. The event brought together a varied group of 160 guests, all interested in developments in the agricultural sector.
During the day, livestock farmers spoke in a documentary made especially for this event, in which they described their farms with an eye on the future. The role of A.I. was also explained, using ChatGPT as an example. The message here was that it is a good tool for looking up information, but it also states untruths without hesitation. So use your farmer’s common sense.
One of the fascinating guest speakers at the event was Tom Keuper, a renowned organic entrepreneur. He shared his vision on the future development of organic farming, with the emphasis on small-scale livestock farms that use advanced technologies that fit within the organic approach.
Another engaging guest speaker was Erik Back, livestock farmer and agricultural entrepreneur of the year 2023. He presented an innovative approach to developing professional livestock farms with minimal environmental impact. Back runs a dairy farm with a mono-digester, linked to the production of duckweed as a protein replacement. This approach promises a smaller ecological footprint as well as more efficient use of resources in agriculture. For example, duckweed production gives a much higher protein yield than grassland. Duckweed is also suitable as a protein source for meat substitutes.
Farmula itself has a clear focus for the future of the livestock sector: longevity and animal welfare. The company has a great deal of knowledge and innovative products to extend the productive life of livestock. Farmula proudly introduced its “+2” concept, which stands for its aim to keep animals on the farm for longer.
All in all, the Farming Forward Event in Lelystad offered an inspiring look at the future of the livestock sector, with sustainability, technology, animal welfare and innovation as the key words.
