a.s Refractometer; a precision instrument

The concentration of antibodies (immunoglobulins) in colostrum is vital for calves’ healthy start. The colostrum meter registers the volume of solids in the colostrum optically; this is the dry matter. A brix meter measures the refraction of light shining through a solution. The angle of refraction relates to the volume of dry matter in the solution. The more dry matter, the better the quality. Normal cow’s milk contains 12.5% dry matter while fresh colostrum preferably contains more than 25%. The instrument does not depend on the temperature, and bases the scores for quality of the colostrum on a numerical scale.
